The Final Push

Paradoxically, the very system that had held me captive also concealed a path toward liberation—in plain sight, within Plato’s writings. The journey would be difficult, but breaking free from hegemony meant learning to rescue truth from illusion and distinguish what I had inherited from what I could discover for myself.

This realization transformed what education meant for me. Education was no longer simply a means of securing employment; it became a rigorous pursuit of knowledge — a way to question inherited assumptions, confront societal bias, and break the chains of ignorance.

I had come close to understanding internal freedom intellectually. But something was still missing. I needed one final push —   an experience that would transform an idea into something visceral.

The critical breakthrough came unexpectedly while I was working for Kaplan/McLaughlin/Diaz Architects and completing the punch list for the Santa Cruz Detention Center.

At the end of the day, the construction workers had already gone home. After three years of design and construction, the project was finally nearing completion. The remaining punch-list items were minor, but important.

Deep in concentration, I walked into one of the holding pods. The door closed behind me. Click. It locked. The sound immediately broke my concentration. For a moment, I was no longer simply the architect inspecting the building. I was inside it.
