Choice does not always mean conscious choice.
When we hear the words female choice, we naturally imagine a woman consciously deciding whom she wants as a partner. That is certainly one form of choice. But biology suggests another layer of selection can occur after mating—Cryptic Female Choice.
Cryptic Female Choice should not be imagined as a woman consciously telling her body which sperm to accept. Nor should we imagine an egg thinking and selecting a winner.
Instead, sperm enter a complex female reproductive environment. Conditions in that environment and interactions between male and female biology can affect their success. The eventual outcome can therefore involve much more than the familiar image of millions of sperm simply racing toward an egg.
The egg does not literally make a conscious decision. The phrase represents something much older than conscious thought: the biological processes through which reproduction unfolds inside the female body.
The Colorful Prince champions this principle rather than controls it.
At the social level, the woman chooses: whom she desires, whom she forms relationships with, and under what conditions. At the biological level, processes within the female reproductive system can influence what happens after mating. These processes are not conscious decisions. The group controls neither outcome.
This also gives the Colorful Prince’s central proposition — Let the egg decide. — a larger meaning.
It is not simply a statement about reproduction. It becomes a metaphor for reorganizing human relationships around female agency and choice, and then allowing the social consequences of that choice to unfold through the group.
