Piercing Cultural Hegemony
The oldest surviving Greek tragedy offers a powerful glimpse into the ancient connections between Africa and Greece. In Aeschylus’ The Suppliant Maidens, fifty Egyptian princesses—the daughters of Danaus—flee Egypt and seek refuge in Greece rather than submit to marriage with their male cousins, who pursue them across the Mediterranean.
Their story centers on the Danaids and the larger tradition surrounding Danaus, whose journey from Egypt to Greece became an important part of Greek mythology.
This ancient narrative provided the inspiration for the storyboard series of Sacred Blood. The series begins by exploring traditions of African presence, migration, and cultural exchange in the Greek Peloponnese, using the story of the Danaids as an entry point into a much larger investigation of the connections between Africa and the ancient Mediterranean world.
