A New Perspective

A decade before my Aha moment, a dream born from the wild spirit of the 1960s counterculture came alive. I was part of a band of young people roaming the valleys and hills of Honolulu, where family ties were loose, and the community pulsed with a tribal energy. 

Gas flowed freely, America brimmed with optimism, and we moved through it all, unaware of the privilege that quietly shaped our lives. That dream faded sooner than I expected, but in its brief glow, I picked up invaluable lessons as a construction estimator. Those skills became my ticket into the world of a major architectural firm.

Over the next six years at Kaplan/McLaughlin/Diaz architects, I advanced in the profession as a project manager and contract administrator, and the firm progressively entrusted me with high-profile projects.

I cannot fully capture the sound that sparked my Aha moment, but it echoed through me. Like Buck in Jack London’s story, that call transformed my vision of the world. The weight of cultural expectations and the urge to prove myself as a Black person faded, replaced by a pull toward poetic beauty that I decided to pursue.
