What did my art reveal? It exposed a hidden truth: a deeply ingrained cognitive bias that distorts our understanding of history.

I realized that the halo effect was actively reinforcing this cultural dominance, shaping perceptions in subtle but powerful ways.

When our initial positive impressions take hold, they tint everything that follows, obscuring the larger truth. We risk overlooking essential details, misinterpreting events, and making hasty judgments. The halo effect especially flatters the trappings of power, seducing us into viewing them as more virtuous or just than they truly are.

A Learning Approach

Writing Sacred Blood made me realize I was actively resisting the notion that our social, political, and economic systems are immutable — that they simply exist and cannot be transformed.

It also revealed how this belief creates the illusion that these systems serve everyone equally, when in fact they are designed primarily to benefit those already in power.

I also recognized that anti-capitalists face immense challenges in building a collective culture with values strong enough to contest cultural hegemony. The dominant culture is alluring — its supposed virtues are so widely believed that it continually attracts people, making resistance difficult.

The halo effect helps explain why oppressed groups often internalized customs and values that ultimately undermined their own interests. Winning hearts and minds required more than charismatic leadership or revolutionary ideas.

Yet, ancient history demonstrates that even the most formidable systems conceal an Achilles' heel — a fatal weakness — waiting to be discovered and exploited.
