Greek Herm

To get closer to the truth, I needed a worthy adversary, someone or something to challenge me. This time, my imagination found it in the form of sculpture.

My fascination with architectural history was sparked by a spirited debate that always brings to mind Professor Spiro Kostof. I never enrolled in his classes, feeling unprepared for the challenge, yet I found myself irresistibly drawn to his lectures, captivated by his infectious passion.

We clashed over whether the Greek herm at the crossroads traced its origins to Africa. I was convinced, without evidence, that it was an artifact woven into Black African culture.

I sensed a subtle African presence lingering within it. His unwillingness to acknowledge this only fueled my resolve to uncover African influences in Greek architecture.

Professor Kostof is gone now, and he will never know the depth of my gratitude for his work and the mark he left on me. In the end, I could not overturn his view, as the weight of current research remains against me. The grip of cultural hegemony is still powerful.

Still, here is what I have learned over the years.
